About the Fisherman

My name is August Plamann, but I go by Gus, and I’m a South Florida native. I’m from Delray Beach, FL, a small tourist town located between Miami and West Palm Beach.

I’m currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in conservation and communications at the University of Florida, but before I moved up to Gainesville I spent most of my days on the beach, usually with my surf rod in hand.

Fishing was more or less a way of life for me throughout my childhood, and even before then.

Old family photos depict me as a two-year-old in diapers playing with a plastic fishing pole.

My dad played a huge role in teaching me how to fish. Before I knew how to properly tie my shoes he was teaching me fishing knots. He introduced me to a sport that became my tireless obsession. And as one of the world’s “fishing capitals”, South Florida was the perfect place to refine my skills.

By the time I was old enough to take sportfishing seriously, I spent my commutes in the backseat of the car pointing out potential fishing spots to my dad and taking guesses at the types of fish we could catch there.

We always revisited fishing spots where we had success, and constantly kept our eyes out for new places that looked tempting.

My dad and I explored the wide range of aquatic habitat that South Florida offers, from the swampy interior of the Loxahatchee River to turbulent inlets along the coast.

I can confidently say that we probably tried or looked into fishing every river, inlet, pier and mangrove estuary from Jupiter, FL to Miami.

Leaving my world of saltwater fishing behind was one of the hardest things I had to do when I left for college. Part of me deeply yearns for the calm evenings I spent casting along the beach.

With most of my time dedicated to academics, I’ve decided to share my knowledge of fishing by profiling some of my favorite South Florida fishing spots.

My posts include general locations, fishing methods, gear, species and other information on how and where to catch fish along Florida’s Southeast coast. I’ll try to do my best to avoid spots that are heavily fished or kept a local secret by guides and charters.

Overall, I just hope this blog allows fishermen to enjoy the success and experiences that I had the privilege of undertaking as I grew up.

Yes you and your dad have done well with fishing and, I believe, being actual companions to each other. I am happy for both of you. Back when your dad and I were kids we had no companionship with our dads and I, for one, am finally getting to know and like my dad. Hurray for fishing.
